This environment art piece is inspired by my time studying concept art abroad in Japan. During my time there, we visited many shrines, but the one that stood out to me the most was the Meiji Shrine. This Shinto shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo astounded me with its beautiful forested surroundings. The atmosphere of the forest created an almost supernatural feel with its towering Torii gates guiding visitors. I sought to replicate this feeling in this environment, with an almost eerie calmness. The Torii gate marks the boundary between the sacred and mundane.
For the foliage and prop pieces I used Quixel Megascan assets, the Torii gate was made by myself. I sought to use limited assets that could be reused throughout the environment while still feeling natural. The scene was created in Unreal Engine 5.
